Understanding Book Royalties

Royalties represent the author's earnings from book sales. Book earnings are influenced by four main factors.

Book Selling Price

The retail price affects the revenue generated from each sale.

Book Format

Paperback, hardcover, and digital editions have different production requirements.

Production Costs

Printing and production expenses influence final earnings.

Distribution Channels

Different sales channels may have different financial structures.

eBook Process

From the manuscript you send us to the printed copy in a reader's hands — here is every stage your book passes through, and what we need from you at each one.

  1. Submit your manuscript

Send the eBook as a Word document with your affiliation and a recent photograph. A preface and acknowledgment are required.

  2. Pre-QC and plagiarism check

Your book goes through quality control on PlagScan. If it clears, it moves to review. If not, we return the highlighted text for you to rewrite.

  3. Review and revision

Reviewer comments come back to you for changes. Resubmit the revised file and we check it once more before it moves ahead.

  4. Proofing, design and ISBN

We proofread, align and design the book, hyperlink every reference and assign your ISBN. The final PDF comes to you for a last read.

  5. Approval and listing

Once you approve, your book details go live on the website and our marketing team sets the retail price.

  6. Hard copies on request

Ask for printed copies at any time after publication. Printing and shipping are charged separately.

Traditional Publishing vs Self-Publishing

Two paths to becoming a published author — each with its own trade-offs.

The Established Route

Traditional Publishing

Traditional publishers select manuscripts and manage publication processes.

Benefits

  • Professional support
  • Established channels

Challenges

  • Competitive selection
  • Less control

The Author-Owned Route

Self-Publishing

Self-publishing allows authors greater ownership and flexibility.

Benefits

  • Creative freedom
  • Full ownership

Challenges

  • Requires professional guidance

InkTide combines professional publishing expertise with author ownership.

Plan Your Requirements and Timeline

Every book is different — here's what shapes the investment and the wait.

How Much Does It Cost to Publish a Book?

Publishing costs depend on:

  • Manuscript condition
  • Editing requirements
  • Design needs
  • Book format
  • Printing requirements
  • Distribution choices

How Long Does Publishing Take?

Every book follows a different timeline. Factors include:

  • Manuscript readiness
  • Editing requirements
  • Design process
  • Author approvals
  • Production requirements

A professional publishing plan should be based on your goals and desired quality — not a one-size-fits-all package.

Preparing Your Manuscript

A well-prepared manuscript creates a stronger foundation for publishing. Authors should focus on:

Completing revisions
Organising chapters
Maintaining consistency
Understanding readers
Preparing supporting materials

Knowledge Creates Better Publishing Decisions.

Publishing becomes easier when authors understand the process. InkTide provides resources designed to help authors make informed decisions, understand publishing choices, and move forward with confidence.
